What is a Freelance Copywriter?
A freelance copywriter is a professional who converts words into cash and customers for your business. They work on a project-by-project basis and usually specialise in a particular industry or form of copywriting.
What do you specialize in?
I specialise in Content Marketing (also known as Information Marketing) in a variety of industries. Unlike advertising which is only effective as long as you are paying to have it aired, content marketing boost the value of your business and its effectiveness actually increases over time. From Web Copywriting and Lead Generation materials (Website Copywriting, Auto-responders, Direct Mail, and newsletter/e-zine packages), Information Marketing Materials (such as Case Studies, White Papers and Articles) I provide powerful, persuasive copy which speaks to the needs of your customers and causes them to act. I also help businesses maintain ongoing relationships with customers so that you stay ‘top of mind’ with customers and keep them for life.
Do you do the work yourself or do you outsource?
I do all work myself. When you engage me, you can be certain that I will be the person you are working with from start to finish.
Are you available for in-person meetings or travel?
In general I don’t find these necessary, but I love to travel. Most communication can be carried out effectively via Skype or email. However, if you feel that face-to-face communication is essential, we can discuss it.
You live in Australia and I’m in the UK or US? Will that be a problem?
Not at all. With email, Skype and other conferencing technology we can discuss projects and share documents easily despite our geographical distance. The time difference can even work FOR you, as I work on your project while you sleep, and it’s in your inbox when you get to work next morning.
Have you written anything for the technology (green, medical, education, etc.) industry?
Every project requires research. I enjoy learning new things and am comfortable with complex ideas, and mastering technical terminology. Sometimes an outside ear can communicate your ideas in fresh ways that have a broader appeal to your target audience. I guarantee that I will communicate your message clearly and powerfully.
Do you do design, too?
No. I am not a graphic designer or a website designer. I understand how websites work, and do my own website maintenance, but I do not have the technical expertise of a web-design specialist. However, I have partnerships with graphic designers and web designers and can either recommend them to you, or manage their work for you.
I have a tight deadline to meet. Can you start on my copywriting project right away?
It depends. I give priority to existing projects and clients, and pride myself on always meeting deadlines. If I can’t meet your deadline, I won’t take the project. Contact me to see if I can help you.
How long will it take you to write my copy?
It depends on the size and complexity of the project, and how much research I need to do. Writing is my business, and I’m quick and efficient, but at the same time you are more likely to achieve your desired goal if I have the time needed to do background research. I prefer to have at least 3 weeks for stand-alone projects because that gives me a chance to step back and view the copy with fresh eyes, but if you have an urgent deadline, I can complete it faster. I guarantee to deliver my work on or before the set deadline, so I don’t take on projects if I can’t complete excellent work within the timeframe.
Regular clients can expect a shorter turnaround since I am already familiar with the background of your company and understand your ethos and voice.
What are your terms?
I quote a flat fee on a project basis, determined after discussion with you regarding your goals for the project, its scope, the materials that you provide and any interviews or research that I need to do. That way we both know what to expect. My rates are based on the value I provide, and the return on investment you expect.
Once we have negotiated a fee, I require 50% non-refundable deposit before I start work, the remainder will be invoiced 14 days after delivery of the draft and is payable within 14 days. Alternatively, you can pay the entire amount upfront and receive a 10% courtesy discount.
What happens if I want you to revise the copy?
I guarantee that you will be satisfied with my work, but no copywriter can guarantee specific metrics. My goal is to write copy that communicates your sales message in a way that you love, and which effectively promotes your business to your target market.
If you’re not happy with the copy I submit, I will work with you until you are, as long as you assign the corrections within 30 days of receiving the copy; take the time to identify exactly what you are not satisfied with and why; and do not change the direction, scope or format of the original assignment.
How do I go about hiring you?
Contact me through the Form, so we can discuss your needs and goals and determine how I can best serve you. We can then set up a phone or video conference. I can be most helpful if we both have a clear understanding of your goals, and desires for the project. After this discussion, I will provide an estimate of the fee and time frame. If you decide to go ahead I will provide you with a questionnaire and an agreement for you to sign.
What do you need from us before you start a project?
First, I need the fee agreement signed and returned with 50% of the project fee. I invoice the second half when I deliver the project.
Second, I need your responses to my Creative Brief (you can answer these on paper or over the phone), details on your product or service, relevant marketing materials and background information, details of your target audience, competition etc.
What are your qualifications as a copywriter?
I have studied with the best copywriters both living and dead, and am continually improving my copywriting skills and keeping up with the latest trends and tools. I have completed several AWAI courses (American Writers’ and Artists’ Institute) and am a member of several Professional Associations including the Professional Writer’s Association, Wealthy Web Writer and Circle of Success.
These ensure that I am receiving critiques from peers and keeping abreast of developments in the copywriting and direct mail world. My motto is: If you’re not growing, then you are dying – and that applies to businesses as well as skills.
