Frequently Asked Questions

Who Do You Work With?

I work primarily with entrepreneurs and independent business owners who share some important characteristics including:
Building for the Future : you aren’t trying to make a quick buck and flip out, your goal is to build a sustainable business with a saleable future;
Self-reliance and independence : you don’t wait for permission to take action and you take responsibility for the outcomes of your own action (or lack thereof);
Innovative and agile : you know the results you want and are willing to look at a variety of strategies for achieving them. You model others’ but you don’t want to copy them;
Ethical : you comply fully with relevant legislation for your industry and have a genuine desire to make people’s lives better;
Growth-Mindset : you know that today’s reality doesn’t have to be tomorrow’s truth and you know that the more your business prospers, the more positive impact you can have on others;
Solution-focused : you know that problems are challenges to be overcome, not prisons that hold you captive so you look for ways to change.

Who DON’T you work with?

If you’re jumping from marketing agency to marketing agency then I’m probably not a good fit for you because it suggests that you don’t know what you want.
Effective marketing is a cohesive strategy, not a set of tactics. You should be interviewing the marketing agency to confirm that they share your preferred marketing approach. If you like ‘shiny object marketing’ and want to ‘do what you see the big players doing’ then we’re probably not a good fit – I DO use the latest ‘tactics’… In the right context.
I do NOT employ a one-size-fits-all program for clients just because it’s the easiest way for me to manage them and look busy. My goal is to maximise your results.

What are your terms and fees?

Once we have discussed your needs, I will quote you a project fee based on the scope of your work. All work is payable in advance of scheduling and all assets belong to the client once full payment has been made.
Ghostwriting projects start from $30,000 – if you require an NDA then fees start at $300,000 (May be paid in instalments)
Direct Response Marketing Strategy Consultations start at $5,000 for a half-day
Ongoing projects are based on a flat fee with deliverables and a timeline.

Who owns the copyright?

Once the copy is paid in full (only applies to ghostwriting projects as ongoing content and other work is payable in advance), my clients own all assets.
Clients will need their own website hosting, CRM/email program, data storage, images and any other resources or expertise that are required. From my perspective, this work for hire – once it’s delivered you own it, you control it, and you are responsible for its maintenance.
Unlike many marketing agencies, I will never hold your data hostage.
Should you need assistance with any of this, I will connect you with experts and let you know what you can expect to pay.

I have a tight deadline to meet. Can you start on my copywriting project right away?

The short answer is: probably not.
However, it depends on the scope, timing, and your definition of ‘right away’.  I give priority to existing projects and clients and I’m usually booked several weeks or months in advance (for ebooks and books there is almost always a 2 month waiting list). If I can’t meet your deadline, I won’t take the project.  Contact me to see if I can help you.

How do I go about hiring you?

Reach out to me via the contact form and I will send a brief questionnaire to discover whether you are my ideal client. If it looks promising, we can set up a time to discuss your needs and goals and determine whether we are a good fit via Zoom.
After this preliminary discussion, I will provide an estimate of the fee and time frame and also let you know what your team needs to provide. (I’ve seen too many people finding out after they’ve signed a contract that their team needs to do an enormous amount of work for the marketing team).
If we decide to go ahead, I will provide you with a more detailed questionnaire and an agreement for you to sign.

You live in Australia and I’m in the UK or US? Will that be a problem?

Not at all – actually, I have homes in Australia and the US and also work with clients in the UK, UAE and various African and Asian countries.
With email, Zoom and other conferencing technology we can discuss projects and share documents easily despite our geographical distance. The time difference can even work FOR you, as I work on your project while you sleep, and it’s in your inbox when you get to work next morning.

Do you do the copywriting yourself or do you outsource it?

I do all client work myself to ensure quality and confidentiality.
When you engage me, you can be certain that I will be the person you are working with and take full responsibility for your deliverables.

Do you do design, too?

No. I am not a graphic designer or a website designer. I understand how websites work, and do my own website maintenance,  but I do not have the technical expertise of a web-design specialist. However, I have partnerships with a small number of graphic designers and web designers who understand direct response marketing and can either recommend them to you, or manage their work for you if you don’t already have a provider you love.

What is Direct Response Marketing?

Direct Response is a proven marketing strategy that is as old as time. It involves making an offer to the marketplace and inviting interested prospects to raise their hand for more information.
As a result, you can quickly identify people who are potentially interested in buying at some stage, and fast track those who are ready to buy now.
Modern direct response involves:
– A lead magnet of some kind that piques interest
– An irresistible offer
– Acquisition of details so that you can follow up prospects and make further offers.

Are you available for in-person meetings or travel?

For many projects face-to-face meetings are not necessary since most communication can be carried out effectively via Zoom or email.
When necessary, I am happy to travel to meet you at your expense.

Can you send me some samples of your work?

No.
And here’s why that doesn’t work…
Your market is unique. Your message is unique. This is true of all my clients and it’s why they hire me. Therefore you can’t judge the copy or strategy you see in someone else’s business.
Much of my work is done under confidentiality or fair use clauses so I’m not at liberty to share it – it’s like asking a lawyer to tell you about all the cases they’ve won and lost before deciding whether to hire him.
If you paid for my services, how would you feel about the possibility that someone else might swipe your material and use it to promote their own business under the pretext of requesting ‘samples’? (See my first point above: if you asked for samples from your industry (which are the only ones with real relevance you might just use them.)
Without campaign and conversion data to provide context, samples are just pieces of text. You may or may not like them, but can’t measure their effectiveness.
